Old Cuban
The Old Cuban is a variation of a Classic Daiquiri. This is a very refreshing drink that is perfect for hot summer days or cold winter nights. Fresh mint and sparkling wine lift the cocktails, while Angostura Aromatic Bitters and dark rum provide complexity. Our Davidsen’s Special Release, Blend 5, is a perfect rum (blend) for this cocktail. With the pleasant sweetness and vanilla notes and the intensity that it brings, it suits the Old Cuban magnificently. Our recipe for the perfect Old Cuban is as follows:
Ingredients
- 6 fresh mint leaves
- 4,5 cl. of Davidsen’s Special Release, Blend 5
- 2,25 cl. of lime juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
- 1,5 cl. of simple syrup
- 2 dashes of Angostura Aromatic Bitters
- 2,25 cl. of sparkling wine (Brut)
Garnish:
- A single mint leaf
How to make
- Shake the first 5 ingredients well with ice (mint leaves, rum, lime and simple syrup)
- Fine/double strain to coupe glass without ice
- Top with sparkling wine (approx. 2,25 cl.)
Like with a Classic Daiquiri or a Scandinavian Daiquiri, it is somewhat easy to customize an Old Cuban. However, not as easy as with the aforementioned. You can of course easily tweak the measurements to suit your preferences, but because of the added complexity of the drink from the Angostura Aromatic Bitters and the general addition of more flavours from mint and sparkling wine, you will see less effect from changing just the rum. However, this in no way means the rum is unimportant, as it brings a lot of flavour and depth to the cocktail. What it means is, that the difference between the rums will likely have to be greater before you really taste it. When making an Old Cuban, it is important to shake it well in order to express all the flavour from the mint, but be careful not to over shake it, as you risk destroying the mint too much, which gives a vegetal flavour. 15-20 seconds should be more than enough.
