Cuba Libre
This drink is a classic. Many people think that rum and coke is just rum and coke, and that you should only use the cheapest of cheap rums for this drink. We strongly disagree with that belief. Even though the cola flavour can often steal the show, the rum is an important part of this drink, which is why you should always use a great rum to make it a great drink. It is important to notice, that there is a difference between a regular rum and coke and a Cuba Libre. Yes, a Cuba Libre consists mainly of rum and coke but to make it more of a drink, a squeeze of lime juice and a dash of Angostura Aromatic Bitters are added. This makes the drink a bit more complex and gives is some freshness to balance the sweetness of the cola. Our ideal recipe for a perfect Cuba Libre is:
Ingredients
- 5 cl. Davidsen’s Gold Rum
- 0,5 cl. lime juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
- 1 dash of Angostura Aromatic Bitters
- Approx. 12 cl. of cola
Garnish:
- Lime wheel
How to make
- Pour the 4 ingredients into a glass filled with ice
- Give it a quick, light stir
With regards to the ice, you should always fill your glass completely with ice when making drinks/cocktails as doing so will ensure you the best quality and longest lasting drink/cocktail. The science behind it is that the more ice you have in your glass, the colder the liquid will be which in turn makes the ice melt less and slower. So, if you fill your glass with ice, you get a drink that is colder and cold for longer. You also make sure that the proportion between spirit and mixer is better in such a drink, the Cuba Libre, as you will start by adding the rum, lime juice and Angostura Aromatic Bitters, and then fill up the glass with cola. Feel free to dump the lime twists into the drink. If you do not have Angostura Aromatic Bitters available, we suggest using a bit more lime (1,5 cl.). If you do not have neither lime juice nor Angostura Aromatic Bitters at hand, Davidsen’s Gold Rum also goes very well in a straight rum and coke.
